Ayurveda is a traditional system of medicine that originated in ancient India over 5,000 years ago. It is considered one of the worldโ€™s oldest holistic healing systems, focusing on promoting health and preventing diseases through lifestyle practices, dietary guidelines, herbal remedies, and therapies aimed at balancing the body, mind, and spirit.

The word โ€œAyurvedaโ€ is derived from Sanskrit, where โ€œAyurโ€ means life and โ€œVedaโ€ means knowledge or science. Thus, Ayurveda translates to โ€œthe science of life.โ€ At its core, Ayurveda views health as a state of balance between the bodyโ€™s three fundamental doshasโ€”Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. These doshas correspond to different physiological and psychological functions in the body and mind:

  1. Vata:ย Governs movement and is associated with qualities such as dryness, lightness, and cold. It controls bodily functions related to circulation, breathing, and nerve impulses.

  3. Kapha:ย Governs structure and embodies qualities of heaviness, moistness, and stability. It controls growth, strength, immunity, and fluid balance.

According to Ayurvedic principles, each person is born with a unique constitution (prakriti) that reflects their predominant dosha balance. This constitution determines individual physical, mental, and emotional characteristics, as well as susceptibilities to imbalances and diseases. Ayurvedic treatments and recommendations are tailored to restore and maintain harmony among the doshas, thereby promoting health and preventing illness.
