VIPASSANA

When I was backpacking India for the first time years ago, I met a traveler who had just sat for his first Vipassana course. He spoke to me about the profound knowledge and insight he gained from his experience. It was my first time hearing testimony of such radical transformation. At the time, I was newer to the concept of meditation and the idea of a 10 day intensive silent retreat was too extreme. When I returned to the States, I continued on the path of deep introspection and worked profusely to integrate meditation practices into daily life. The conversation of Vipassana lingered long enough in me, to evolve into a desire to seek this truth. This then became the source of inspiration behind returning to India.  

Brief Overview 

Originating from the teachings of Buddha, over 2500 years ago, Vipassana is one of Indiaโ€™s most ancient meditation practices from the teachings of Buddha. It was taught by him as an art of living. Courses vary in length, but the traditional format is a 10-day residential retreat. During this time, participants immerse themselves in intensive mindfulness meditation practice, for 10 to 11 hours a day. A strict schedule is to be followed beginning at 4:00am and ending at 9:30pm. Participants are offered free food and accommodation for the full duration of the course if they can agree to follow the guidelines. Reading, writing, and communicating is strictly prohibited during the 10 day duration.

The 10-day duration is considered sufficient for practitioners to deepen their understanding of Vipassana principles and experience significant progress in mindfulness and insight meditation. The technique is designed to cultivate mindfulnessโ€”a heightened awareness and acceptance of the present moment. Vipassana encourages practitioners to observe their thoughts, sensations, and emotions without judgment or attachment.

My Experience

At its core, Vipassana taught me the essence of stillness. Learning the technique felt similar to an internal operation, a reset to the depths of my nervous system. The damage caused by chronic stress can’t be repaired by maintaining the same relentless pace that created it. The simple technique taught me how to be present while eating food, and listening to the sounds of nature. When you completely deplete yourself from the outside world and disrupt common patterns of habit, it creates the optimal setting for deep introspection. Mindfulness becomes a guiding principle for cultivating presence, compassion, and resilience.
